I am of Serbian background and I can understand what is happening in Tibet right now. Chinese government has many examples of Western "humanity". The Chinese are strong enough not to allow the same scenario as in Kosovo where "human rights" have been used as a tool to dismember an sovereign country Serbia, to be able to pursue it's own interests. If human rights are main West objective then the Western countries should start investing in Tibet as well as they invest in other China region. The reality is that “profit margin” is more important that human rights.
The “Human Rights” is just a political tool used by West with a purpose to weakening other countries and made them easier target in advancing its own political and economical interests.

When I was a little girl my grandpa used to tell me about what he saw when he traved the world as an engineer. He told similar stories about serf skin used as raw material for religious purpose in old Tibet too. Sadly many people from the western world are quite ignorant about the atrocious history of old Tibetan aristocrat.

There are so many people from the western world not knowing anything, but still have such a strong opinion on criticizing China for the human rights condition. Some of them can't even point out where China is. Some of them can point out where China is on a world map, but have no idea about where Tibet is! We Chinese can understand that as the Teenager queen competetant said "there are some many countries having no maps in the world." Even if they know where Tibet is, they don't know the history about Tibet at all. Before new China was founded, Tibet was colonized. Before the colonization by Britain, it was slavery society under the control of Da Lai.

During that slavery period, it was Da Lai who controled 7% of the rich land lords and royals, and this 7% population control the rest 93% of Tibet population who are slaves and tenants.

Da Lai should come back to overside Tibet again? Under slavery? Such a joke. And he has never talked about slavery before Western Media.

Da Lai's Nobel Prize? The biggest joke in the world. The prize should be made of human skin, which is his favorite kind lol !

Being ignorant is fine. But being ignorant and being criticizing to other countries in the world is so stupid!

We drove that wife beating husband from the land and gave the woman land, a way to make her own living, and education for her and her children. We have made mistakes, but really, we are monsters compaired to the husband who raped his wife for all she was worth. After all, she was his rightful property, to do as he pleased.

Do you guys realize that limb cutting takes places today in Sharia Law. Public beheading, cutting of limbs, public stoning already takes place today. China has more "liberating" to do.

Seriously, this was all in the past and if China wants to air the dirt on Tibet's past they need to do the same about their violent past. We'd all like to see what is happening today in Chinese prisons... I'm sure the world will be shocked.

Do a little research on google, then you will find what Tibet were before 1950: Theocracy, monks ruling. That's not a part of communism propaganda.

Chinese prisons like the most americans prisons: gangs, drugs and corruptions, no big difference. What a pity!

You westerns are poisoned by CNN, BBC.

If you've been in Lhasa, there is a museum having many more so called "incrdible" photos and REAL samples, like serf skin that was skinned alive before 1951. Just go to Lhasa and ask local tibetans where the museum is. Or directly ask local tibetans whether it's true or not. The religieon of tibet is not like the other branches of Buddhism. People, like Dalai, who believe in it some times need human skin, skulls, and thighs to do some worship ceremonies (remember, those have to be got from alive bodies). Some slave owners did skin their serfs for punishment. I think this is common knowledge like the Earth is round. Why some people just can't accept it as truth?
From the word you typed, I feel you are more like a racist. Why Chinese can't say anything true? Because of their yellow skin? If Adolf Hitler said, "the sky is blue," I would admit that Hitler at least said a truth.
Do you know how many tibetans living in tibet, China? How many real protestors there? As I remember (maybe I am wrong, corrct me if you can), there are nearly 3 million tibetans in tibet, China. But only around 10,000 of them really want to support so called "Free Tibet" protest. So, shall we listen to the rest of them? Did BBC and CNN ever do any survey in tibet about what they really want? Before they do that, how can they judge what's wrong in Tibet? Does everybody there want "Free Tibet"? I doubt that. I think they only want peaceful lives, not violence.
BTW, why Chinese want to prosecute them? Does the Chinese government do not know killing tibetans in China would not really help China? I doubt that. I feel very sorry for some westerners who would rather trust obvious lies from BBC and CNN than any word from Chinese. Is that somehow called "racism?"

Isn't this what a civilized world would do? To prosecute the husband in order to protect the wife and children?

And the Chinese government pumps billions of dollars every year to Tibet instead of withdrawing (there's really not much valuable there) to build schools, hospitals, roads and houses for the benefit of Tibetan. You decry all these and want them to go back slavery just for the freedom of corrupted monk aristocrats?!

And the most importantly, Tibet IS part of China, not "other's wife".
Tibet only joined China probably 700 years ago and was not officially ruled for 50 years by the central government during early 20th century, which is why somebody tried to claim independence. But where's US 700 years ago? Where's modern France, Germany, and other countries 700 years ago?

Also Re: "Think about this story: an analogy to Chinese logic"

This is exactly what happened between USA and Iraq. That's invasion. That's crime. It's not just a mistake. People died from that. Economy is down from that. You want them to take the consequence? You want them to confess the crime? Remember, to them, democracy is just for internal, even for external issues. That means democracy is just for self-benefit. That's how they did the war. For their own benefit, which is resulted from "democracy", there's no truth, no justice. Lie is not unnormal at all. There's UN, but when it's against their country interest, UN in nothing.

When Bush announced the war, 97% people voted for him. Now they all admit they were wrong. But they still think they were doing democracy which was good. They still think it was just a technical mistake which was done by the law. New york people vote for new york problems, that's democracy. US people vote US president, that's democracy. If only New York people can vote for US president, is that still democracy? Your family members voted to kill another families, you call that democracy?

"All western countries/media are focusing on China because they want to diversify people's attention." Some american told me, "If people start killing, even thougn they eventually realized it's a mistake, they would not stop. They would comit to win to the fight. Because the winner is always right." Today people are complaining the government because they lose. The american said majority people are stupid. Media lie, people follow. Democracy sometimes could do things wrong because of the stupidity.

Today in the western coutries, they have a big problem. They are losing their economy and power. They are afraid things would be worse and worse. What can they do? Get more people together, find the enemies and beat them. That's how they think they can keep their power.

They lie? Yes, but they take us as their enemy. This a war. What can not happen in a war?

Excuse me. I need correct one typo. It was not 97% people voted for Bush, but 97% of media lied about Iraq. That's what he said.

As a student from Hong Kong, which seen by someone as the most democratic part of China, I need to clarify some serious misunderstanding towards my country and Tibet. Foreigners always complain China is deprived of human rights and democracy. But experienced by myself in Hong Kong, there are democracy and human rights here.
It is heartbreaking to see that some people claimed this inconvenient and shocking photos taken in Tibet as "the old Chinese propaganda". Haven't you think what you believe can be the "US propaganda"? Can't it be a "Western propaganda" or even a "Dalai's lie"?
You argue that Chinese is lacking of human rights, but just look back on the American history. Do you know how badly the Black were treated? They were being discriminated against all the time, not to mention human rights!
You really think that is called democracy?
For those who support Dalai Lama as the "human right hero", I strongly recommend you to do some research on the history of Tibet. See how many people had been victim of "your hero's policies". How many slaves had died during that time. And you even give him a Nobel prize of Peace after he had killed so many people in Tibet? Then why don't you also give one to Hitler for he had killed so many? RIDICULOUS! It is really sad to see the Nobel Prize is used as a political tool, what's the point of that?
Free Tibet activists, as a Chinese, I won't be angry seeing your words neglecting what really happens in Tibet and China. Instead I just feel sympathy for your ignorance about the real situation in Tibet and your reluctance to face the truth, if you choose to believe the misleading claims from the media.
I just wonder, how many "democracy fighters" or journalists had ever been to Tibet. Stop making up news please, I am sick of it!
I believe democracy and human rights are of great importance, but it has to follow by rational understanding of some facts. Westerners, don't let emotion nor politicians to blind your eyes.yvwnarg

I don't think that it is right for people to judge what is going on based on propaganda and even the news, but I personally feel that China, if it really wanted to 'liberate' Tibet, should have first contacted some UN official or brought it up in a diplomatic way. Instead it just went on its way. Unfortunately this has led to many people making their own conclusions. I also feel that CHina truly feels justified in absorbing Tibet due to its belief that it belongs to China and I don't believe in that.

As for the person who talked of being able to get into schools easier because of being Tibetan in CHina, the same thing is happening for the poor, low caste/ non-Brahmin people in India, so the same thing happens in different ways all around the world, so please don't complain, unfortunately, life isn't fair.

Like I said earlier, people SHOULD go there and see for themselves before they make such bold comments. My humble opinion though is that China could have found a more diplomatic way to resolve its occupation of Tibet.

*** Well, well, well... Look it up. if they are made from dead monks, they cease to have the power as religious instruments. That is what Dalai believes. Or rather that is what he must believe if he were really the 14th incarnation of Dalai Lama. This guy believes he is a deity living on earth. Skinning a few lowly human serf is just nothing to him. He needs to practice this as all 13 incarnations before the current Dalai XIV did. His next reincarnation would need to do it as well in order to perform the crucial rites.

Dalai XIV when in exile since 1959 needs to put on a new face toward the west. The West sucks in all these enough to give him a Nobel. Was he required to repent his past sin? Did he denounce his barbaric religious practice (skinning human alive). Has he promised his next re-incarnation would not practice these rites again?

Time is running out for him. He needs to free Tibet soon so that his next re-incarnation can perform these rites. Otherwise, dire consequences will happen to the Dalai deity.

Anyone who can actually say that conditions in Tibet today is worse than they were before 1950 is in denial. Conditions in Tibet still do have a long way to go from Western standards, or even the rest of China, but there's progress.

Most see problems with China's current situation, but they fail to see how much it has improved. If you had cancer, but had it treated with chemo, then it's an improvement. Even if you have lost your hair, constantly feel sick and being constantly in pain, it's still an improvement.

People need to have patience. Wait for China, and you will see. Just wait.

wow. this sure was a heated discussion. i am surprised i saw no references to china's policy of censorship. I know too little about Tibet to comment on the validity of all of these accusations, though the style in which they are presented is clearly sensationalist. the part that i think is interesting is the small amount of attention brought to the disinformation caused by the chinese government. any government that censors the press, and free speach on the internet can not be reasonably trusted. In america every student reads about the unpleasant history of our country. we don't hide anything from our own citizens. but i feel china strives so hard to paint only a rosy picture of itself, that sometimes it acts unconscionably. (and the fellow from hong kong... sorry but there is a huge difference from hong kong to china, as anyone in hong kong will tell you) i really believe that if the current dalai lama was indeed associated with acts such as skinning humans alive.... something about this would have been brought up in the last 49 years (more publicly...not just extremely obscure articles with lots of circular referencing). who knows...maybe not. but it does seem odd. also he has done an awful lot of good for the world in those years. it would be like if pol pot had retired to do charity work and positive thinking clinics after committing crimes against humanity.
i sure am late to the discussion though.

I have been to China - in provinces and cities where people defecate and urinate in the streets openly. I've seen places in China where some people were not even allowed to own bicycles, and where others were forcibly relocated from lands their families had lived on and farmed for years because the government wanted to move other families of different ethnicities in. I have seen with my own eyes how communism in China has failed those who are not of the "privileged" communist regime, and how people in some provinces are forced to mutilate their children so they can beg on the streets more effectively so the family will not starve.

China is horribly bigoted and actively cruel to many minorities - especially any minority that claims a devout religious heritage (and yes, all religious heritages are riddled with people who hide within them for protection and commit atrocities of all kinds if you dig deeply enough). It kills the Chinese that they cannot kill the spirit and the devotion of the Tibetan people. The action of China is very similar to that of the US government's treatment of Native Americans in the 18th and 19th century: move other ethnicities in, displace them, force them to not speak their native language, ban religious practices, punish, imprison, and occasionally kill them just for good easure and to keep control, etc etc etc - it worked in the US and I suppose at some point it will work in the ethnically Tibetan areas of China.

I find it interesting that such a large, powerful nation finds such a small group of people so incredibly threatening and intimidating.

I do have some doubts on Dalai Lama.

1. He is more a politician than a Buddhism practiser. A true Buddhist should never be involved in any politics.
2. How could his brothers and sisters hold all important positions throughout little Tibetan exile empire?

3. How could he sale so many books? A true Buddhist should never make money from his teaching. It is their duty to teach and for free. Having said that, what are in the book are already taught by Buddha, why Dalai Lama still takes the credit and making money?...

Everyone beeing a little familiar with Tibetan funeral rites knows that one could find cut off limbs etc. in any single graveyard in whatever Tibetan village or town. This was due to Tibetan custom of cutting apart corpses of dead humans and sacrificing it to wild animals and birds.

Chinese communist government exploited and still exploits this fact for its anti-Buddhist-propaganda to justify its criminal imperialistic occupation of Tibet.

Only blank-minded and uneducated People without historical knowledge are to be misled and manipulated by this kind of disinformation!

first of all serfdom, horrible yes, was not exactly the same as manifestations we think of in european history serfs did have some freedom to leave property as obligation to farm the land was tied to the family not the individual, so as one worked the field others could work as traders, etc. Also it wasnt unheard of for serfs in tibet to own serfs to create a hierarchy unheard of in European serfdom, so that term can be a little misleading.

Even though as i said this form of Serfdom was horrible, dont let it sway you into thinking that chinese rule over the tibetan people has brought great improvement, otherwise why do the people of tibet still cling to the idea of freedom or at least autonomy from China, and during a 1981 visit to Tibet by the Dalai Lama's brother was he greated with crys of joy and mobbed by masses of Tibetans in Lhasa and other cities. DOnt forget the chinese allowed ten million chiense to die during the great leap foreward, and repeatidly violate human rights against ethnic han, how do you think a ethnica, and ideological minority gets treated in any system, lt alone one that treats the majority so badly?

(not to say america dosent treat minorities like shit)

Although China has a lot of problems, it is considered to be far more advanced and civilized than the Tibetans as we've seen in these few photos. There are museums in Tibet and Qinhai that I've been to and they are actual torture chambers and slave quarters. These slaves were certainly subjected to immense cruelty by their owners. Don't be fooled by the West's propaganda over the Dalai Lama. He is not what he appears to be. Heck, marketing companies do a brilliant job of painting a picture of someone when it's really not true! The US no not condone the Tibetan way. But they don't really care about that. The more behind these cultures get left back, the easier it is for the US to dominate. This is the real reason behind their support to the Dalai Lama, in that it will assist them in accomplishing their goals of a divided and therefore weakened China. They see China as a threat, criticize China for not be transparent and not revealing their intentions. But I ask this, do we not consider the US to be the most secretive nation on this planet? Why then do the public accept their words when they say other countries need to be more open and transparent when our own country is not????? Don't be fooled easily. Just as propaganda was widespread in the old communist era, it still exists in the United States. It's everywhere.
